March 4-9, 2018 Retreat: New Mexico, US

Treat yourself to several luxurious days and nights of “CREATIVE FLOW“.  Our retreat site is located in the high desert, in the eclectic and historic town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.  T or C (as the locals call this town) is situated along the beautiful Rio Grande surrounded by incredible natural Hot Springs.  Each participant is housed in his or her (or couples, partners) own private Suite with open access to private Hot Mineral Baths, a secluded Courtyard, and clear skies where you can breathe, slow down, and focus.

Our Art & Yoga Retreat offers daily workshops and evening activities in Creative Art and Yoga practice for adults of all ages and abilities.  We strive to balance structured (instructional) time with free exploration. There will be plenty of time set aside for Soaking, meditation, journaling etc…on your own.  Each day also brings something new and unique during our many workshop offerings in the Art & Yoga Studios.

During the evenings, we provide special events and additional workshops with music, art, movement, and sharing.  The retreat site-located at Pelican Spas-is a perfect place to enjoy this magical and creative time in a beautiful desert setting!

CREATIVE FLOW Retreat Leaders & Facilitators:  Facilitators for the retreat are Sonia Dalessi, who is a certified Yoga Instructor with over 15 years of teaching experience.  Her focus is in connecting yoga practices and artistic awareness.  Souheir Rawlings will conduct the Creative Arts workshops, where she shares her knowledge as a certified Expressive Arts Consultant and Educator with over 25 years of teaching and training experience.

Our Intention…

Is to guide and nurture creative expression through Movement and Art. During our retreat, we provide individual and group offerings in workshops, private coaching sessions, and special guest events daily.  We also allow for plenty of contemplative and meditative time to yourselves, where you may wish to stroll around town, take a drive into the desert or along the Rio Grande, or soak in the healing waters of our many natural hot springs in this breathtakingly beautiful area of southern New Mexico.

Art & Yoga Integration

We will have a multitude of art materials, creative arts activities, and guided Expressive Arts sessions daily.  Yoga will be guided twice daily as well, and will emphasize “tapping into” the Artist within…releasing creative blocks and encouraging free expression.  The Art component will relate to the Yoga teachings, allowing a Creative Flow which promotes connection between mind, body and spirit.  It is our goal to provide a supportive, warm, fun, and inspiring opportunity for all who participate.

History of T or C and SURROUNDING AREA

Truth or Consequences’ long history has unfolded around its hot springs.  For millenia, humans have gathered around the hot mineral water percolating up in the Rio Grande’s sandy marshlands where downtown T or C now stands.  The Ancients of pre-history built pit homes and pueblo-like dwellings and farmed the surrounding area.  They gathered around the hot springs for socializing and healing.  Much more recently, the Apache roamed the region using the hot springs for gathering and healing.

In 1598, Juan de Oñate and his troops moved northward through New Mexico, followed by Spanish settlers.  They built homes and villages, farming the canyons in the area.  In the 1800s, the Apache were driven out, and more white settlers arrived and developed ranching and mining activities.  In T or C, the first bathhouse was built in 1882 by cowboys from the John Cross Ranch.  More bathhouses followed.

Construction of the Elephant Butte Dam (1911-1916) brought hundreds of workers to the area.  Upon completion of the dam, many settled by the hot springs, floating their small cabins down the Rio Grande from the dam site.  Many of these cabins can still be seen in the Hot Springs Historic District.   The town, know as Hot Springs, thrived and grew into a well-known resort and healing center, drawing thousands of visitors.  The downtown area was filled with motels, bathhouses, clinics, bars and stores.

On March 31, 1950, the town’s citizens voted 1294 to 295 to change its name from Hot Springs to Truth or Consequences.  Ralph Edwards, producer of the popular radio game show of the same name, had issued a challenge for a U.S. town to change its name in celebration of his show’s 10th anniversary.  Many answered his call, but he was inspired by the town’s focus on recreation and healing.  On April 1 (April Fool’s Day!), 1950, Ralph Edwards came to T or C to lead the first Fiesta celebration.  He returned each year for 50 years, demonstrating his love and dedication to the town and its citizens.
